Snow, Snow, Snow, yes we have snow! I cant help but think of the song Snow in the movie White Christmas everytime it snows. If only I could sing it the way Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney did on the train on there way to Vermont. Yes its a beautiful winter wonderland out there and this girl is pretty happy to finally having it look a lot like Christmas outside. Ryan on the other hand is dreading another Minnesota winter. Getting around in a wheelchair can defintely be difficult at times but toss in the snow and it can make getting around even more interesting. Plus the brutal winter temperatures can be pretty harsh for Ryan this time of year. Literally as I sit here typing Ryan is asking if Im telling all of our readers how much I love the snow and how much he despises it or as I should put it correctly how much he despises trying to get around in it. The season of wearing long underwear hits sometimes even in the months of Sepetember and can last up to the month of May. With poor circulation and lack of feeling on his lower half Ryan defintley has to watch his skin when going outside. Dont think he wil be using our seat heaters in our vehicles, a skin burn can easily happen with out Ryan knowing it, even through his clothes. For me having a spouse in a wheelchair winter begins the season of continuous wheelchair tracks and sand on our hard wood floors. Needless to say I can always tell where Ryan has been in our house.
Two Saturdays ago when it snowed Ryan went out in the moring to shovel what he could of the driveway, I was in the house doing some cooking. Soon enough he came back inside for me to hear all about how he got stuck at the end of the driveway. He decided to shovel a path down to our mailbox and when he turned around to come back up the driveway his wheels started to spin out on the snow. Fifteen mintues later he finally made it back up the driveway. I couldnt help but laugh as he told the story and even more so as he told me how many people drove by and just waved at him. It may sound mean as I sit here and still contiue to laugh at him getting stuck but if you know Ryan he really has a flare when telling his stories and has a good sense of humor about life in a wheelchair. Last year on December 31st he got backed into by a pickup and pushed into the street, luckily he didnt get hurt and it defintely scared the crap out of him, but he made sure to joke about how he hoped it wasnt a sign of how the year 2016 would go. The stories could go on and on about the adventures of Ryan in his wheelchair and Im sure another Minnesota winter will bring us plenty of more stories to share along the way, but thankfully I have a husband who has a good sense of humor about all of it. You never know maybe this winter will be about trying something new and finding ways to enjoy winters in Minnesota in a wheelchair. Whatever may happen it will be an adventure and Im sure there will be a few laughs along the way! So for those of you living in this state, stay safe this winter and enjoy the beauty of another Minnesota winter. Since Ryan wasnt to keen on going out in the negative temps to have his picture taken enjoy a few my mother has captured so far this winter!
